Washington County School District has been awarded the 21st Century Rural Expansion Grant in the amount of 500,000 annually for a total of four years to support 3rd grade - 8th grade afterschool academic and enrichment programs.
The purpose of the 21st Century Rural Expansion Grant is to support the following initiatives:

help students, particularly students who attend low-performing schools, to meet the challenging State academic standards;

offer students a broad array of additional services, programs and activities during non-school hours such as youth development activities, service learning, nutrition and health education, drug and violence prevention programs, counseling programs, arts, music, physical fitness and wellness programs, technology education programs, financial literacy programs, environmental literacy programs, mathematics, science, career and technical programs, internship or apprenticeship programs, and other ties to an in-demand industry sector or occupation for high school students that are designed to reinforce and complement the regular academic program of participating students

offer families of students served by community learning centers opportunities for active and meaningful engagement in their children’s education, including opportunities for literacy and related educational development
The 21st Century Afterschool Program will begin January 21, 2025 ( 3:00pm - 5:30pm) at Vernon Elementary and Kate Smith Elementary School for 3rd - 8th grade students. The program will provide academic tutoring in math, science, and reading and enrichment consisting of (music education, reader’s theatre,STEM, personal enrichment, martial arts (self-discipline); spanish; sign language; chess, culinary, and dance).
Transportation will be provided for all participants! Students will also be provided an afternoon snack at the 21st Century Afterschool Program!
